TCE Grant Extends Suns Indigenous Program into Netball
Michael Thomas
Surf Coast Suns have been lucky enough to recieve a grant from Torquay Community Enterprise to expand our Indigenous Awareness Program into Netball from the 2020 Winter Netball Season.
Building on the sucess of our U13 Indigenous Football Jumper, the club applied for additional funds to purchase a set of Indigenous designed Netball dresses which may be worn by any of our Netball teams from U13’s through to U19’s.
The purpose of the program is to show the Torquay and greater regional area that we are community minded and accepting of cultural diversity. It will encourage discussion of local indigenous sensitivities, and recognize the important history of Aboriginal Australia.
The Suns were reporesented by Amber Potter and Michael Thomas at the Bendigo Bank on Thursday 19th Sept to accept the Grant.
The Design was completed by Local Indigenous artist Nathan Patterson. Titled “Together under one sun”. Feather/gum leaves representing Bunjils county, the cross hatching through the middle represents Wathaurong Land, blue strip is the Ocean and the Sun is a meeting place also symbolizing the Club/Community young and old.
