Suns Netball Indigenous Dress Launched in Round 1
Michael Thomas
After a long wait and plenty of delays to the season start, Surf Coast Suns under 13’s were finally able to launch the clubs Indigenous Dress at Portarlington on the weekend.
The dresses are part of the clubs Indigenous Awareness Program, made possible via a grant from Torquay Community Enterprise.
This project solidifies who we are as a club. We believe by doing this, it will show the Torquay and greater regional area that we are community minded and accepting of cultural diversity. It will encourage discussion of local indigenous sensitivities, and recognize the important history of Aboriginal Australia.
All of our competitive age groups will have an opportunity to wear the dresses as they are rotated through the teams throughout the season.
Local Indigenous artist Nathan Patterson has designed the dress.
Titled “Together under one sun”. Feather/gum leaves representing Bunjils country, the cross hatching through the middle represents Wathaurong Land, blue strip is the Ocean and the Sun is a meeting place also symbolizing the Club/Community young and old.
Surf Coast Suns would like to thank Nathan again for his amazing design and Torquay Community Enterprise for their ongoing support to make initiatives like this possible.
