Surf Coast Suns Shining in 2019
Michael Thomas
THE Surf Coast Suns wrapped up their season, and President Michael Thomas said 2019 was the club’s biggest year yet.
He said the Suns had experienced amazing growth from the previous season, with almost 450 families now involved.
“Our Friday night Auskick numbers are now over 180, with around 80 of those hitting football age next season. What is impressive is the fact that we have so many girls in Auskick this year – something the club is not only proud of, but really excited about the future and direction we are heading.”
To accommodate this the Suns will be launching their first Girls under 12 football team in 2020.
The Suns fielded seven junior football teams in 2019, including an under 13 team which played the season in the leagues first indigenous jumper. Based on Auskick attendance and continued growth in Torquay North, the club will field multiple teams in all age groups up to under 15’s next year.
“The focus of the club across football and netball has been to create a fun, safe and inclusive culture, where kids are given an opportunity to develop their skills and form friendships that they will cherish,” Mr Thomas said.
“Netball also had a massive season. Our NetSetGo program had over 40 participants, while we fielded eight teams including three under 11’s, of which our under 15 and under 17 teams made the Grand Final. To ensure we keep everyone involved within the Suns we will be looking to expand our Netball age groups up to under 19’s next winter season in addition to the eight teams being entered into the summer competition in Geelong across all age groups.
“The committee is really proud of all of our kids and how they have performed this year and would like to thank all of our wonderful families and volunteers for their support throughout the season.”
