Geelong Cats Mark Blicavs and James Parsons attend Suns Training

Michael Thomas

On Tuesday 4th of June Surf Coast Suns were visited by Geelong Cats Mark Blicavs and James Parsons.

The night was well attended by all of the Under 9’s and U11’s for theior regular training, but also by U10’s and U13’s who were taken by Parsons for a goal kicking clinic.

Congratulations to all the players for their intelligent and informative questions at the end.

Big thank you to Mark and James for coming out on a cold night and to AFL Barwon and the Geelong Cats for helping to make it happen, as you may see by the photos the kids loved it.

Well Done everyone, it was fabulous to see you all having a great time.

As you can appreciate it’s a hard job getting all this happening with such a minimal turn around between the summer competition.

If you have any feedback or issues, please do not hesitate to shoot us an email or give us a call. Mike our President is also happy to chat at any time and has been extremely supportive of netball at The Surf Coast Suns.

We are still short one coach for our Under 13’s girls, Mel Maycock our other under 13 coach is all over the training and I am sure would appreciate your assistance and support on Tuesday’s and we are all available to help you with games plans for Friday games if you needed this.

Two of our Under 11 teams really need a couple of extra kids, if you know any boys or girls keen to play, please ask them to give us a call.

Our main aim is to get girls & boys having fun, making new friends & staying active.

Mike has spent lots of time working on the website, it’s a great tool and has lots of info including club codes of conduct.

Suns Successful in Torquay Community Enterprise Grant

Michael Thomas

On Thursday 6th December the Surf Coast Suns were awarded a grant through the Torquay Community Enterprise (TCE) to support their Indigenous Awareness Program.

The grant was to fund a set of Indigenous jumpers for our under 13’s football team to wear through 2019, and future years.

‘This project solidifies who we are as a club’, said Mike Thomas, club president. ‘We believe by doing this, it will show the Torquay and greater regional area that we are community minded and accepting of cultural diversity. It will encourage discussion of local indigenous sensitivities, and recognize the important history of Aboriginal Australia.’

The jumper design was done by local Indigenous artist Nathan Patterson, who was also created indigenous jumper designs for AFL teams Geelong and Essendon.

The design is titled “Together under one sun”. The feather and gum leaves represent Bunjils county, the cross hatching through the middle represents Wathaurong Land, the blue strip is the Ocean and the Sun is a meeting place also symbolizing the Club/Community young and old.

Mr Thomas added, ‘We would like to thank Torquay Community Enterprise for their support in this project and invite everyone to our first game of the year where we will launch the jumper and the season.’

Suns News Update

Michael Thomas

The season keeps moving along nicely for all of our Suns families. Auskick and NetSetGo are going really well. We now have 96 kids registered in Auskick which is by far our biggest year yet. Well done to all our volunteers from Auskick and NetSetGo who make each Friday night fun for the kids in our community.

Wanted - Second Hand Footy Boots

One of our awesome NetSetGo families (The Moreton's) are organising a footy boot drive for indigenous kids in the remote community of Nhulunbuy, which is in Arnhem Land Northern Territory. This is a fantastic initiative and would ask all families if they have any footy boots that your kids have outgrown to drop them off to the club after training or games in the next two weeks, so that they can be taken up to Nhulunbuy in late June. Thanks for getting behind this great cause,

Netball

The netball girls continue to improve each week which is great to see. They are becoming more and more competitive and goal scoring has increased each game as well. Great job girls, keep it up.
